69 Chevelle, Colored pencil on paper 8″x10″

I had a lot of fun drawing this car.  It’s actually the second 69 Chevelle I’ve been asked to draw, and it is quickly becoming my dream car.  What a beauty.  I wonder what it was like to buy this as a new car, instead of the new cars people are buying these days.  Contact me if you are interested in custom drawings, or if you just want to discuss some art.  I have been busy for the Holidays, but I still have some spots open for commissions, custom artwork and original art.

Comic Convention artist displaying my art and booking custom drawings and commissions.

I am back home from Tucson.  Kids are in bed, everyone’s got school tomorrow, but I have lot’s of drawing ahead of me. The Tucson Comic Convention was a huge success. It was not nearly as huge as the Phoenix Comicon but the attendees were just as awesome.  The cosplay was great.  and there were tons of great artists there too.   I sold a lot of prints at the convention, but I also booked several quick commissions.  I also finally put up a display behind me where I could show some more of my art including several originals, and a giant cutout of Chewbacca     Image

I was asked to do a lot of custom sketches from Doctor Who, Mario Brothers to the video game “The Last of Us.”  But the most fun I had was when someone asked me to do a sketch of them as a super hero.  One family asked me to draw there little boy as Thor, and another kid asked me to draw him as the joker.  I only charged $20 for the superhero sketch and I was drawing non stop.                                      ImageImage

I only charged a few dollars extra for adding color to a drawing like this one of a child’s head on THOR’S body. I really enjoyed doing these commissions on the fly.  It sparked something for me, and I hope I can start booking more quick sketches like this.

I was also asked to do several drawings of characters from video games and tv.  My favorite was the Adipose from Doctor Who.

A 7 year old boy walked up to me and asked if I’d draw Bowser for him. It was awesome! It made him so happy!  Usually I tell people to walk around and come back in 15 or 20 minutes and I’ll have the sketch done for them.  This little guy asked if he could stand there and watch while I draw.  Well, of course he could! and he didn’t take his eyes off the drawing.

This is from the game called “THE LAST OF US”  I have actually never played this game before, but the girl that asked me to draw it described it to me.  Sounds amazing, you can also check out some reviews and game play on youtube.  I think it is kind of like “resident evil,” but I’m not quite sure.  The game seems to have a really serious plot and I don’t want any spoilers so after watching 5 minutes of game play I turned it off.

Thanks again for all the support, and to everyone that made it out to the convention.  I was surprised at how many attendees traveled from PHoenix to Tucson for this convention.  THe next big AZ con will be “Amazing Arizona Comicon” in January.   So the countdow begins for that!  I’ll be posting more photos and more art.  Several prints, originals, and custom drawings are always available, check out my blog and website.  Drop me a line, I’d love to talk about the art, And I love starting new projects.

Memorial portrait drawing (a drawing of my grandmother)

Memorial portrait drawing (a drawing of my grandmother)

My grandmother passed away a few months ago. She was 94 years old, and she was a very strong woman. After she passed away I drew this portrait of her and gave it to my mom as a present.

My family is from Romania, and my grandmother was very religious. Every year my grandmother would give me a present on Saint Andrew’s day and Today is Saint Maria’s day, I’m posting this portrait drawing to honor her memory today.

Portrait artist, pencil drawings, custom art and design. Thank you internet, for letting me share what I do with the whole world.

So summer vacation is officially over.   And my summer of portrait art is over.   My first attempt at becoming a portrait artist was a success.  In 2.315 months I was able to draw all of the pictures you see displayed.  These custom drawings and commission works were all a result of selling custom drawings on etsy, using google adwords to promote my website, even getting jobs off my facebook page.  I had a blast.  I worked my butt off,  and I’m not making as much money as I was teaching, but this custom drawing, doing portrait drawings.  It’s what I was born to do.  Thank you internet, for making it so easy to share what I do with so many people.   Check out andrewspencil.com if you want more drawingsImageImageImageImageImageImage

Drawing tools

In this video post I’m talking all about the tools that I use to do my drawings. I go through a lot of drawing phases, and sometimes I change things up. But for right now these are the tools I use.

People come up to me often and ask me, what paper do I use, what type of pencils do I use. And It’s really not as important as you think. If I’m doing some quick sketching, I’ve been known to use printer paper and a pencil out of my sons backpack.

If I’m going to be drawing something like a finished portrait drawing, custom drawing, commissioned drawing, or whatever, something that will end up in a frame. I may use some different tools, but mostly, at that point it’s really just the paper that needs to be improved. Check out the video and let me know what you guys think.

Drawing tutorials?

My wife and I are still on vacation (or as I like to call it ‘unemployed’) as we await the beginning of the next school year.  My bank account is empty, as per usual, and I do not currently have any drawing projects going on.  What am I going to do with all this time now….. and then suddenly it came to me.  … … … I will start a drawing tutorial website.  I mean, why not right?  I’ll start with wordpress, and I’ll be teaching little lessons (video instruction) on my absolute favorite things to draw.  custom Portraits, child portraits, car portraits, custom drawings, custom art.  any type of artwork that people are interested in buying because it helps personalize their world.   When someone wants to buy a personalized portrait or drawing of their car, they don’t care as much about the style of the artist.  I’ve never had someone say,  “that doesn’t really look like my son, but the style is amazing so I’ll take it.”  occasionally I have people mention that they love the style of my custom portrait drawings,  but the comment I hear most often is, “WOW! that looks just like my son or daughter, you did a great job.”

Alright, that’s what I want to help you guys draw.  Custom drawings, accurate portrait art.  Not only is it easier to sell custom art, but it’s fun for me.  I love drawing eyes, I love drawing many facial features.  I love the human figure, and I love drawing cars.  Really, I love looking at a photo or still life, and recreating it as a drawing.  It’s almost like someone working on a jigsaw puzzle or something.  I put little pieces together until the big picture starts to come together.   I’ll keep everyone updated.   Videos coming later today.  Thanks again and don’t forget to visit http://www.andrewspencil.com to see more custom portraits that I’ve done.

oh, also, I will open up a link that will let you submit photos of your work for a free critique.  That’s right, I will critique your art.

Freelance artist. am I a business owner www.andrewspencil.com

There’s a weird pattern to getting jobs.  one week I woke up every morning to find a new job request in my email.  It was such a rewarding feeling.  Commission drawings, custom portrait, draw my classic car, car portraits and car drawings.  Yea I know, lot’s of exciting buzz words, it’s my dream coming true.   I felt like there was a flood of work.  Although, that dried up quick, and I haven’t had a job in a few weeks.

It’s the 4th week into summer and, needless to say, I haven’t been teaching.   A lot of people look at me and say, ‘Oh, enjoy your summer vacation.’  Okay, so for the record, I don’t get paid during the summer months, so instead of calling it a vacation, just call it a ‘temporary unemployment.’  I am moving fast and getting lot’s of portrait drawings done.  I just hope that I can start paying my bills so I can continue doing what I love, drawing and making custom art.
